Heat recovery VRF air conditioning

What We Did

Early last year our client, Butterworth Laboratories, was looking for some much needed additional office and laboratory space. After a long search they acquired some suitable premises close to their existing site.

During their hunt for a suitable building, we were asked to provide budget costs to provide the cooling, heating and mechanical ventilation for the various premises they were considering. Once Butterworth finalised their new site, we were tasked with providing cooling, heating and ventilation to their new offices and laboratory, as part of the refurbishment.

We carried out the detailed design and subsequent selection of a Mitsubishi Electric heat recovery VRF air conditioning system along with three Lossnay heat recovery ventilation (MVHR) systems. The building was previously served by a selection of elderly Fujitsu DX split type ducted systems and these were decommissioned and stripped out as part of the refurbishment works.

The building was of a steel frame construction and this impacted hugely on the space available within the ceiling void. This made the design and installation of the MVHR system ductwork particularly tricky, especially when considering the need for sufficient service access to the MVHR units themselves. We weren’t the only contractor who needed to run services within the ceiling void and after several co-ordination meetings with the interested parties the final ductwork design had changed markedly and eventually evolved to satisfy everyone’s space requirements.

Additionally, the office suite was to house an important section of the client’s IT infrastructure and a dedicated high sensible DX split system was selected to serve the rack room where the IT equipment was to be located. All of the air conditioning and ventilation systems were interfaced to a secure central controller, which enabled remote access and control via the client’s internal network.

The new VRF and HRV systems were installed and commissioned in phases over a period of six months, to tie in with the refurbishment programme of the main contractor.

Here’s what our client had to say about us:

“We have recently completed a major refurbishment of our Administrative Premises and Advantage were our preferred contractor based on their proven track record. They consistently delivered their commitments ahead of schedule, supplied good advice, energy efficient systems and sensible problem solving.

Advantage Air Systems continue to be the preferred contractor for our Air Conditioning requirements, and we would not hesitate to recommend them to other Companies or individuals for any Air Conditioning projects.”
